October 7-11, 2019 was a spirited Electronic Media & Film residency week with Sarah Groff-Palermo. Sarah worked with her live-code and code-based, vector videos, bringing these into our real-time video systems. Much of the work done during her residency was done on the Expanded Media, Fairlight CVI. The CVI is a legacy, digital video processor and can be seen as hybrid analog/digital. Sarah also worked with another legacy digital video-processor, the Jones FB1 frame buffer, as well as our contemporary Blackmagic Design ATEM 1 M/E video mixer. A number of mixer recordings made significant use of video wipes. Sarah traveled to the IEA with Wes Hennigh who documented Sarah’s residency and consulted with her on hardware systems. Sarah and Wes researched the Fairlight CVI which has been a real benefit for expanding program knowledge. Also Sarah generously made time for a studio visit with Expanded Media’s Barbara Lattanzi as well as shared recommendations for live code software. Lastly, Sarah installed and with the assistance of Wes documented a number of works in progress in the expanded media immersive gallery.

Sarah Groff Hennigh-Palermo is an artist, programmer, and erstwhile data designer. Her work centers around methods to make computers and data more humane — more accessible, more flexible, more contextual. She has created data-obscured art sites, new computer languages, and hybrid nostalgia machines. Her current focus is livecode and digital abstraction. Sarah is an alumna of the School for Poetic Computation, Recurse Center, Brown University, and NYU Tandon School of Engineering. She has taken part in group shows at Sonar+D, Westbeth, Day for Night, and Flux Factory.
