The IEA welcomed Man Bartlett of New York, NY, for an artist residency for the week of November 17th. Man, a graduate of Emerson College in Boston, MA, is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice includes drawing, collage, video, performance and digital projects that use online platforms as outlets for playful yet subversive social critique. Much of his work exists and critiques social media, reflecting the medium itself and our reliance on these networks. His work also spans out to drawings, animations, and performances, always turning a mirror to the audience, the art world, or the social networks on which we often follow these.
During his residency, Man furthered his developing piece entitled 24hRaga, a 24-hour audio collage inspired by Classical Indian raga, psychoacoustic binaural audio, The Schumann Resonance, and clandestine numbers stations. Conducting simple interviews with participants from the Alfred community, Man asks questions related to memory, space, and time, asking interviewees to recall memories based in simple questions such as “what is your first memory?” These, along with contributions provided by phone, will ultimately be mixed into a 24-hour long piece to be pressed into 48 LPs and presented as a performative installation. Man also spent extensive time in the Sound Studio, working with the Doepfer signal processing tools mixed with recorded material to create new works and generate material for future works.
Those wishing to contribute to this project can call (347) 464-8904 and follow the prompts to make a recording that will be mixed into the final piece.
