On Sunday, Feb 15 Althea Murphy-Price (@altheamurphyprice) completed her two-week Print + New Media residency with us! In the second week of her residency, Althea completed her edition Participation Award and began exploring other compositions and materials for further work inspired by this edition. Participation Award is available for purchase through ieaEditions.
“I have long been interested in pursuing a residency at the iea, so I was thrilled to accept the invitation. The iea has a longstanding reputation for its exploration of expanded forms of printmaking, and I welcomed the opportunity to work alongside experienced individuals who understand how to integrate new technologies into an artistic practice. My time during this residency not only met my expectations, but I was also fortunate to collaborate with individuals who encouraged me to experiment.
My recent work explores three primary themes: achievement, protection, and decoration. Participation Award was inspired by unacknowledged effort. The piece presents a formal, gridded background upon which a colorful arrangement of flat ribbon shapes is carefully organized, appearing to dangle from an armature-like structure. The colors within the collaged elements reference awards given for lowest performance, subtly questioning how we assign value and recognition. I fully embrace the flatness of color and the spatial shapes created through screenprint and collage, allowing their deliberate two-dimensionality heightens the meaning of the dimensional.”
