INVISIBLE

“Making the invisible visible” is the major theme that I wanted to convey by my works during the graduate student period. For me, I prefer to know and perceive one thing by vision, hearing, or touch rather than some windy and abstract concepts. For example, time, data transfer, and the process of the forming of thoughts in our minds are all abstract which cannot be heard, seen, or touched. However, if I claim that one or some species on the earth or in the universe can perceive the “real entity” of the processes above, it is also credible.

Everything involved with “change” is tangible. In the past, “tangible” and “intangible” are used to refer to entities from the perspective of eye vision. According to modern opinions, what cannot be captured by our naked eyes may not be called as “intangible” philosophically.

In other words, from the perspective of philosophy, the “invisible” may not be “intangible”. In short, as for a change, there is only the distinction between “visible” and “invisible” rather than between “tangible” and “intangible”. In addition, the world entities are divided into two types: one type refers to the tangible entity with a speed lower than the light speed or detected entities; the other type refers to the intangible entities with speed faster than the light speed, such as ether. Thus, the passing of time and information transfer are invisible, which need some mediums. The invisible world can be recognized by people in the visible world. This is dialectics.

“Making the invisible visible” means a lot to me. For example, if someone was shocked, he would sweat, heartbeat would become faster and pupil would enlarge, which are all external phenomena that can be seen by people, but what happened to this person’s internal world? What will happen to his brain? I am curious about these. In terms of time, the passing of time is visible but only through various watches which are a kind of tool to meet the demands of human beings who are the advanced animals, but many phenomena are the visible expression, including sunrise and sunset, the change of the four seasons and the change of shadows, etc.

In my works, shadows, ices and brain waves are three mediums of expression.

An artist should open his or her eyes to behold the concepts and ideas which he or she is concerned about deep down inside. An artist should focus on elements and creation means used by him or her in artwork creations. This can help an artist deepen understanding of himself or herself. Why is it necessary for an artist to learn himself or herself? Self-exploration is an endless process for every person. A better understanding of oneself can provide the driving force for many artists’ artistic creations. This is also where my art creation starts.

To me, art creation is a means for me to learn myself well. Every work of an artist is a display of himself or herself. Through the topic, elements, and creation mean demonstrated by the artwork, audiences can see the internal world of an artist. Take me for example. I am trying to open my eyes to see a more complete self by discussing darkness and brightness, the multicultural environment, culture of mechanical copy, decomposition and Cyborg aesthetics; the image of characters without a face, lunar eclipse, black hole, shaking face, bold colors, broken TV, all-permeating fog, grid, and pink school bag inserted with knives; my own employment of painting, video, animation, and sound editing and interactive media. During the process, my understanding of myself deepens.

Luftwerk explores light, color, and perception in immersive, experience-based installations. Focused on the context of a site for each project, Luftwerk applies their own interpretive layer, integrating the physical structure, historical context, and embedded information into each piece. Since founding in 2007, Luftwerk has amassed a significant body of work ranging from site-specific installations to experimental projects that interpret data. Light and color are primary elements in work by Luftwerk. Their interest lies in the power of light as a crucial element to sight, exploring its dynamic relationship with the perception of color. Using various modalities—projecting videos, casting shadows, creating a custom sculpture—they integrate light into every project to explore its ephemeral and shifting nature. Petra Bachmaier and Sean Gallero are the artists of the collaborative team Luftwerk.
