Fiat 2022-2023!

Dear Alfred University students, staff, and faculty:

Let us reflect on some highlights from the end of the Spring semester, which put an exclamation point on a successful and fulfilling 2021-22 academic year.

In April, Peter Cuneo ’67, chair emeritus life trustee, was awarded an honorary degree, Doctor of Commerce, honoris causa, following his on-campus presentation— “How You Can Become a Superhero Leader” —in which he discussed his renowned career turning around struggling businesses. It marked Peter’s second honorary degree from his alma mater; in 2013, he was awarded the degree Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa. Among his successful corporate restructurings, Peter took over Marvel Comics when it was emerging from bankruptcy and converted it into Marvel Entertainment, ultimately selling the venture to Disney for $4.5 billion.

Peter Cuneo, with help from Spidey (aka Emilia Smith ’24, a double major in physics and art while involved with our dance and glass-blowing programs), gives a presentation on campus which touched on Peter’s work in turning around struggling business.

At the Spring meeting of our Board of Trustees, we honored Marlin Miller ’54, HD ’89, HD ’19, longtime trustee and former Board chair, for his many years of service to Alfred University. His colleagues on the Board, students, staff, faculty, and alums expressed words of appreciation in a video titled “A Message to Marlin Miller,” which was shown at a dinner on May 12. The 2022 Marlin Miller Outstanding Senior Award winners were also recognized at the dinner. Marlin, whose philanthropy has transformed our campus and the lives of so many of our students, was awarded chair emeritus life trustee status after 52 years on the Board, six as chair.

Marlin Miller is all smiles as he receives a book, “Notes to Marlin,” printed in his honor. Looking on is Erin Martinovich, vice president of University Advancement.

At our Commencement exercises on May 14, world-renowned biomedical engineer Dr. Robert Langer—the most cited engineer of all time and the co-founder of more than 40 companies, including COVID-19 vaccine maker Moderna— addressed our Class of 2022. Langer, who received an honorary degree from Alfred University during the ceremony, gave an inspiring keynote in which he urged our students to follow their passions, dream big dreams, persevere through challenges, and treat people with respect and kindness.

Dr. Robert Langer delivers the keynote address at the 2022 Commencement.

As we reflect on these and other notable events from 2021-22, please join me in looking forward to this new 2022-23 academic year and the highlights it will bring.

Fiat 2022-2023!
