Fiat Juneteenth
Dear Alfred University students, staff, and faculty:
Juneteenth commemorates the proclamation on June 19, 1865 by Union Army General Gordon Granger in Galveston, Texas freeing the last remaining enslaved Americans. Our Institute for Cultural Unity, in partnership with other Alfred University and Alfred State College employees and the Village of Alfred, have organized a Juneteenth celebration at this Sunday’s Farmers Market. Occurring between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m, volunteers will provide information, celebration mementos, and an activity tent for kids.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. noted that “The arc of moral history is long but it bends toward justice.” Over 50 years after his death, we are often reminded that work remains to be done to realize the ideals behind the Galveston proclamation and Dr. King’s words. As we celebrate Juneteenth let us take to heart the importance of our unfinished work.
Fiat Juneteenth!
Mark
