Fiat Laughs

Dear Alfred University students, staff, and faculty:

The return of DeAnne Smith ’98 to our campus is definitely a laughing matter. A successful stand-up comedian, DeAnne is sure to have you in stitches during her performance at 9:00 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, April 1, in Nevins Theater, Powell Campus Center.

All joking aside, we have always said our students and alumni are Outside of Ordinary! DeAnne proves this yet again.

DeAnne, who graduated from Alfred University with a degree in English, lives in Toronto and has made her name in comedy around the world. A Canadian Comedy Award winner, she has performed in numerous venues, including Just for Laughs, JFL42, the Winnipeg Comedy Festival, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the New Zealand International Comedy Festival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and the Iceland Comedy Festival.

She also has performed on televised programs including Last Comic Standing and The Late Show in the United States, as well as in Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Her video “Straight Men, Step Your Game Up” has over 46 million views, and her current half-hour special, Gentleman Elf, can be seen on Netflix.

Melbourne’s The Music calls DeAnne’s latest show, Post Joke Era, “a virtuoso display of smart, slick, silly brilliance—a metaphorical (and literal) mic-drop of a show,” giving it five stars. The United Kingdom’s Chortle calls her “always relevant, but never reverent” while the Telegraph says of DeAnne: “Smart. Very funny. Effortless charm lets her get away with murder.”

Please join me in welcoming DeAnne back to campus (she was last here in 2011 when she delivered the Riley Lecture).

Fiat laughs!
