Fiat Generous Philanthropic Investment in Alfred University

Philanthropic support for our University during the 2018-19 academic year demonstrated once again the tremendous generosity of our dedicated donors. New financial commitments and cash received doubled, while donations to the Alfred Fund set a new standard for a third straight year.

Financial commitments last academic year totaled just more than $36 million, and included the receipt of approximately $13 million in cash. Donors committed $18 million during the 2017-18 academic year, including $8.2 million in cash.

Jason Amore, vice president of our Advancement team at Alfred University, notes how the philanthropic investment of our donors helps fund a variety of institutional priorities including scholarships, faculty/staff support, athletics, and a host of academic and extracurricular programs aimed at enhancing the student experience at Alfred University.

Jason also acknowledges increases in support for our Alfred Fund, which comprises unrestricted gifts. The Alfred Fund totaled $1.92 million last academic year, an all-time high which topped the previous year’s record $1.7 million.

“These kinds of jumps (in the annual fund) are bucking national trends. In talking with my colleagues at other institutions, most (unrestricted giving levels) are flat,” Jason observes. “This really highlights the passion people have for Alfred University and the impact their philanthropy has on our University and students.”

Other highlights of giving for the 2018-19 academic year included $5.48 million in endowed scholarship support, and a total of 5,784 gifts from 2,825 donors. It also included a $325,000 gift from alumnus Terry Galanis Sr. ’40, which provided a one-time supplemental compensation to all full-time and part-time, regular non-bargaining unit employees hired before July 1, 2018.

In addition, membership in our Saxon Circle—Alfred University’s five-year leadership giving society—increased by 75 members, from 452 as of June 30, 2018 to 527 by June 30, 2019. Of the total membership in our Saxon Circle at the end of June 2019, 59 had joined as students (there is a lower threshold annual giving level for students as well alums who have earned an Alfred University degree within the last ten years) and 52 were faculty/staff. Since the close of the 2018-19 academic year, Saxon Circle has grown further, to 548, with 60 of the founding members having joined as students and 54 as faculty/staff.

Please join me in thanking our generous donors and the inspiration that they provide through their philanthropic support. Their investment in our University allows us to add an important margin of excellence to our impact and enhances our ability to transform student lives and better our world.
