Fiat Purple Letter…and Pie and Ice Cream…Days
Please join us, if you can, next Tuesday, April 2, at 12:10 p.m. in Nevins Theater, Powell Campus Center, for the announcement of a special gift from Terry S. Galanis, Sr. ’40. The founder of Sealing Devices, Inc., a business he began in his garage and nurtured into a multi-million-dollar-a-year business. Terry S. Galanis, Sr., is the father of our Alfred University Trustee Terry S. Galanis, Jr.
This most recent gift from Terry Galanis, Sr., is one in a long history of generosity from the Galanis family to Alfred University. They sponsored the Galanis Business Award for our College of Business that introduced the Alfred University name to hundreds of Western New York businesspeople. They made a gift to establish the junior varsity football coaching position, assuring more student-athletes an opportunity to play. In addition, they refurbished the gymnasium at our McLane Center creating the Galanis Family Arena. It is a top-notch facility for our own teams, and one that has allowed us to also host numerous high school athletic events and sectional competitions, thereby introducing Alfred University to scores of area students.
The gift by Terry, Sr., celebrates his 101st birthday. He remains active professionally, and makes his way into the Sealing Devices office on most weekdays. Even before we received his latest gift, we had made a decision to award Terry, Sr. and his son honorary degrees at our commencement on May 18.
Following the announcement in Nevins Theater on April 2, the Support Staff Council and the president’s office will jointly sponsor a pie-and-ice-cream gathering at the Community Table, adjoining Nevins Theater. Take the opportunity to help celebrate NEDFD (National Eat Dessert First Day) by swinging by for a slice and/or scoop.
Please also join us on April 2, at 12:45 p.m. on the quad for an Alfred University group photo. At that time we will celebrate the return of the giant purple letters and a “!” spelling out “Fiat Lux!” The letters first appeared just prior to last June’s Reunion and were put away for the winter. Unless we have a snowstorm next Tuesday, they will be back!
But that is not the end to the celebratory week: Thursday, April 4, is our University’s second annual Day of Giving, an on-line event during which we challenge the entire community—alumni, students, faculty, staff, family and friends—to join us in an effort to increase support for the Alfred Fund, which goes predominantly to support student scholarships. The actual giving site will go live on April 1.
As part of this year’s Day of Giving, two donors have graciously agreed to match, dollar-for-dollar, up to $200,000, any gift to the Alfred Fund and any new or increased commitment to the Saxon Circle, our five-year program for leadership gifts. In just under three years, we have a remarkable 503 donors who have signed up for the Saxon Circle.
