We produced an edition of a ten foot long relief print, an edition of a five colour diptych (also a relief print), an edition for an exchange portfolio, and a 3 colour, hand drawn lithograph. It’s a challenge for many studio artists to access the time and support to create work with new to them technology. Without the support prior to arrival and the technical guidance during the residency, I would not have explored the potential of combining hand carving and laser engraving in the same work.

This exploration of historic engravings from the American Civil War satisfied a number of studio goals and inquiries that had been building over the years. I wanted to explore if these colloquial images, when combined together, could bare witness to current moments and chords. What’s possible when I combine my own mark making with these illustrations from such a violent, formative time in my nation’s history? These questions now hold more potential, are an even richer studio direction having experimented in such a low risk environment with the freedom and support offered.”

If you missed Ericka’s artist talk, you can view it and other talks on YouTube at www.youtube.com/@theinstituteforelectronica5746.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image media=”90519″ media_width_percent=”100″][vc_column_text]Myles and Ericka at the offset press.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image media=”90516″ media_width_percent=”100″][vc_column_text]Mixing inks.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image media=”90520″ media_width_percent=”100″][vc_column_text]Registering a screenprint layer.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image media=”90513″ media_width_percent=”100″][vc_column_text]Ericka preparing a litho stone.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image media=”90486″ media_width_percent=”100″][vc_column_text]part one: pausing now and again…[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image media=”90483″ media_width_percent=”100″][vc_column_text]part two: …in the sunny spaces of the forest[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image media=”90490″ media_width_percent=”100″][vc_column_text]Signing prints.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image media=”90512″ media_width_percent=”100″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image media=”90515″ media_width_percent=”100″][vc_column_text]Charcoal rubbing at monument in Belfast, NY.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image media=”90521″ media_width_percent=”100″][vc_column_text]Excursion to Belfast, NY.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

Ericka Walker received a BS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and an MFA from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
