Myles Calvert <\/span>will join the School of Art & Design on July 1st as\u00a0<\/span>Director of the Institute for Electronic Arts.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

The<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Institute for Electronic Arts<\/a><\/span>\u00a0is a high technology research studio facility within the School of Art<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0Design, NYSCC, Alfred University, New York. The iea encourages<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0supports projects that involve interactive multi-media systems, experimental sonic\/video production, digital imaging,<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0publications. The iea is committed to developing cultural interactions spurred by technological experimentation<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0artistic investigations.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Myles<\/span>\u00a0Calvert<\/span> was born in Collingwood, Ontario. He attended the University of Guelph with a focus in printmaking, before traveling to London, UK where he completed his MA in Printmaking, at Camberwell College of Art (University for the Arts, London). Major bodies of work included installations of screen printed toast\u00a0and\u00a0the idolization of popular British celebrity culture. During this time, he worked for the National Portrait Gallery before moving to Hastings in East Sussex, to teach printmaking at Sussex Coast College (now East Sussex College)\u00a0and\u00a0become the Duty Manager of the newly established Jerwood Gallery (now Hastings Contemporary).<\/span><\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nFour formative years were spent as a Visiting Professor in Expanded Media at Alfred University (New York State College of Ceramics) and Alfred State College of Technology, teaching across print-based mediums including core foundations programs, senior advising, and graduate mentorship.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Recent residencies include Art Print Residence (Barcelona, Spain)\u00a0and\u00a0Proyecto\u2019ace (Buenos Aires, Argentina), a lecture\/workshop at PUCP (Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f2lica del Per\u00fa) in Lima, the Tamarind Institute (Albuquerque, NM),\u00a0and\u00a0the McColl Center (Charlotte, NC).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span>On joining Alfred as the Director of the IEA, Myles<\/span> states:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Entering this exhilarating new chapter in my career is a source of great excitement as I gear up to reconnect with the dynamic community at Alfred University. I am eagerly looking forward to forging close partnerships with the exceptional faculty, staff, and students, not just within the Divisiont of Expanded Media but throughout the entirety of the university.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The IEA possesses a rich heritage of engaging with the global community of talented print\u00a0and\u00a0electronic-based artists. It is my earnest intention to uphold\u00a0and\u00a0strengthen these invaluable connections, while also nurturing opportunities for both the campus\u00a0and\u00a0the wider western New York community to thrive.<\/span><\/p>\n

I extend my sincere gratitude to those who have paved the way before me, from the pioneering efforts of Jessie Shefrin, Peer Bode and Joseph Scheer since the IEA’s inception in 1997, to the recent ambitious initiatives spearheaded by Miranda Metcalf. Their contributions have laid a solid foundation upon which I am honored to build and expand.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
