Alfred University has always been ahead of its time. Since its founding in 1836, Alfred has broken barriers by welcoming women, Native Americans, and African Americans into its classrooms long before such inclusion became common in higher education. That pioneering spirit continues today as we proudly support first-generation college students, those who are the first in their families to pursue a college degree.
A first-generation college student is usually defined as someone whose parents or guardians haven’t earned a four-year college degree. Yes, they can have siblings who have been to college, but it is defined by the parents’ or guardians’ experience. These students often navigate college life with limited guidance in higher education, making their accomplishments even more meaningful and their journeys uniquely brave.
Nationwide, nearly 40% of college students identify as first-generation. Despite their determination, these students face significant challenges: only 26% of first-generation students earn a bachelor’s degree, compared to 82% of students whose parents have college degrees. They are also more likely to experience financial hardship, with 70% reporting that financial difficulties affect their attendance at college.
At Alfred University, we are committed to changing that narrative. This year, we are focused on ensuring that we are aware of all our first-generation students at AU. Collecting accurate first-gen data so that we know exactly who they are.
On November 5th, we will honor this legacy and celebrate the future at our First-Generation Student Celebration. This special event will recognize all upcoming graduating seniors who are first-generation students, acknowledging their hard work, resilience, and the transformative impact of their educational journey. It’s a moment to celebrate not just individual achievement but also the broader story of access and opportunity that defines Alfred University.
We’ll also highlight the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP), which has been a key part of our dedication to first-generation students since 1992. HEOP offers academic support, financial aid, and a supportive community to students who demonstrate promise and determination, often facing significant challenges. Throughout New York State, HEOP students consistently demonstrate strong academic performance and high college completion rates, thanks to the program’s comprehensive support, which includes tutoring, mentoring, and financial aid. Not every student can participate in the H/EOP program. They must also participate in a summer program before their first year at AU that prepares them to navigate Alfred University in and out of the classroom.
At Alfred, we believe that being the first is something to be proud of. Whether it was breaking ground in the 19th century or supporting trailblazers today, our mission remains the same: to open doors, lift voices, and empower every student to succeed.
Tips for Families Supporting First-Generation College Students
1. Stay engaged: Ask your student about their classes, goals, and challenges. Your interest shows you care.
2. Encourage help-seeking: Remind your student that it’s okay to ask for help from professors, advisors, or campus support services.
3. Celebrate milestones: Recognize achievements big and small to boost confidence and motivation.
4. Learn together: Familiarize yourself with college processes like financial aid, registration, and campus resources.
5. Be patient and supportive: The higher education journey can be overwhelming. Your encouragement makes a difference.
As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting first-generation college students, Alfred University is working diligently to ensure that we are eligible to become a First Gen Forward campus. This national designation, awarded by the Center for First-generation Student Success, recognizes institutions that demonstrate a strong dedication to advancing the success of first-generation students through data-informed practices, institutional support, and community engagement. We look forward to joining a network of colleges and universities that are leading the way in creating inclusive and empowering environments for first-gen scholars.
To the families of our first-generation students: thank you. Your student’s choice to attend Alfred University is more than a milestone; it’s a gift. It’s a gift of trust, hope, and potential. We recognize the bravery it takes to be the first, and we respect the strength required to support them. Your student means everything to us, not just because of what they’ve accomplished, but because of who they are and the future they’re creating. At Alfred, they are not alone. They are part of a community that believes in them, celebrates them, and supports them every step of the way.
