Welcome from Beth Ann Dobie, Provost and Chief Operating Officer

Hello AU Families!

The closing weeks of the spring semester are an exciting time at Alfred University. Students are wrapping up their class work, taking exams, submitting final papers, and defending their honors theses. This is also the time of year that we celebrate our students’ accomplishments: their academic achievement, their leadership, and their accomplishments as athletes. Some of our formal events include our Honors Convocation, the Student Leadership dinner, and the Alfies. There are many others, though, that make this a celebratory time of year!

There are two events that highlight our first-year students and seniors, respectively, and speak to the heart of Alfred University. These are Unity Day and the Undergraduate Research Forum.

Our Unity Day celebration was held on April 24th. This festival is a celebration of cultures through food, music, and educational activities. Each of our twenty-two sections of the Common Ground program presented their class projects. Their presentations engaged issues such as the effects of social media, strategies for stress relief, and expanding recycling efforts, among others. The range of topics covered global issues that directly affect college students’ lives.

On April 18, we held our Undergraduate Research Forum. More than one hundred students presented posters that were the culmination of their research projects. Students from across the sciences, engineering, the arts, business, and liberal arts participated, demonstrating the depth and breadth of academic pursuits at Alfred University.

Commencement was celebrated on May 11. We are particularly proud of our Class of 2024. Most of these students began their college careers at the height of the pandemic. Their resilience and determination have served them well! Please join me in congratulating the Alfred University Class of 2024!

Sincerely,
Beth Ann
