Scholes Library Looks to Protect and Display a Gift of Historic Value"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.alfred.edu\/aulibrarynews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2014\/07\/img_0280.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-534 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.alfred.edu\/aulibrarynews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2014\/07\/img_0280.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"IMG_0280\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nScholes Library is anxious to display and preserve a bit of history and is\u00a0currently seeking donations\u00a0to\u00a0protect and display a most wonderful gift.<br \/>\nThis past April, Scholes Library was honored\u00a0to accept a donation\u00a0of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alfred.edu\/pressreleases\/viewrelease.cfm?ID=8841\">historic significance<\/a>. \u00a0The gift is a rare, 2 volume text titled <em><strong>\u201cTrait\u00e9 \u00c9l\u00e9mentaire de Chemie,&#8221;<\/strong> (Elementary Treatise of Chemistry) <\/em>\u00a0<em><strong>by Antoine Lavoisier<\/strong><\/em> (1793).<br \/>\nThis title is of particular historical importance for several reasons, including its widely recognized place as \u201cthe world\u2019s first textbook in Chemistry.\u201d \u00a0 Lavoisier is often referred to as &#8220;the father of modern chemistry&#8221; and is credited with developing the first experimentally based theory of the chemical reactivity of oxygen. \u00a0Laviosier is also co-author of the modern system for naming chemical substances. \u00a0 The donors\u00a0are\u00a0Alfred alumnus Roger Eiss (\u201964) and his wife Francoise Bourget. \u00a0A\u00a0fuller story on this item donation and its history\u00a0may be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alfred.edu\/pressreleases\/viewrelease.cfm?ID=8841#sthash.n7VIJ9Sq.dpuf\">here<\/a>.<br \/>\nScholes Library takes great pride in this acquisition and has pledged to protect it, display it and make it available to researchers. \u00a0\u00a0To this end, the library\u00a0has received a &#8220;matching gift&#8221; opportunity from an anonymous donor. \u00a0Should the library be successful in securing donation of\u00a0$1,200+ \u00a0for this purpose, our donor will contribute an equal amount\u00a0allowing for the purchase\u00a0of an archival quality display case to preserve our newest treasure. \u00a0A quality,\u00a0environmentally protected\u00a0casing\u00a0will\u00a0allow us to establish a permanent exhibition of the 2 volume set (and display its historically significant illustrations) within the Scholes Library Special Collections Area.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scholes Library is anxious to display and preserve a bit of history and is\u00a0currently seeking donations\u00a0to\u00a0protect and display a most wonderful gift.
