How fun, we have our own alphabet! Actually, quite a bit of the University’s\u00a0 history can be discovered through the following poem, written by student Gertrude Burdick and published in The Alfred Monthly<\/em> in October, 1898.

\n<\/p>\n

University Alphabet<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

A<\/span><\/b> is for Alfred, the seat of a college<\/span><\/p>\n

famed far and wide for the depth of its knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n

B<\/span><\/b> is for Brick, where its students are boarded,<\/span><\/p>\n

and all the comforts of home are afforded.<\/span><\/p>\n

C<\/span><\/b> is for Chapel, the first thing each morning,<\/span><\/p>\n

where advice is bestowed, also much needed warning.<\/span><\/p>\n

D<\/span><\/b> is for Down-Town, a source of attraction<\/span><\/p>\n

To any who suffer from mental inaction.<\/span><\/p>\n

E<\/span><\/b>\u2019s for Eleven, the great and the glorious,<\/span><\/p>\n

long haired and strong limbed, o\u2019er all victorious.<\/span><\/p>\n

F<\/span><\/b> is for Faculty, grim, gray and awful<\/span><\/p>\n

to him who\u2019s committed an act that\u2019s unlawful.<\/span><\/p>\n

G<\/span><\/b> is for Gothic and Greek, which is taught there,<\/span><\/p>\n

to help fill the empty young heads that are brought there.<\/span><\/p>\n

H<\/span><\/b> is for Hard old translations that vex us,<\/span><\/p>\n

And I<\/b> is for Irregular verbs that perplex us.<\/span><\/p>\n

J<\/span><\/b> is for Junior \u2013 what shall we do with \u2018em?<\/span><\/p>\n

Give them Seniors\u2019 old shoes when they\u2019re through with \u2018em.<\/span><\/p>\n

K<\/span><\/b> is Keep out of the Sophomores\u2019 business,<\/span><\/p>\n

And pay no heed to young hundred-two\u2019s dizziness.<\/span><\/p>\n

L<\/span><\/b> is for Lover\u2019s Lane, green and mysterious,<\/span><\/p>\n

where we may flee from the problems that weary us.<\/span><\/p>\n

M<\/span><\/b> is for Midnight oil, burned by the capful \u2013 <\/span><\/p>\n

not to mention the matches scratched up by the handful.<\/span><\/p>\n

And N<\/b> is for the poor Nervous system that\u2019s shattered<\/span><\/p>\n

in an effort to gather some thoughts widely scattered,<\/span><\/p>\n

to produce an O<\/b>ration that\u2019s fit for Lyceum,<\/span><\/p>\n

on all sorts of smart things and how we may be \u2018em.<\/span><\/p>\n

P<\/span><\/b> is for Picnics, Pickles and Pleasures,<\/span><\/p>\n

and poor lemonade poured in plentiful measures.<\/span><\/p>\n

Q<\/span><\/b> is for Questions obtuse, depth revealing,<\/span><\/p>\n

discussed by the Oros in mad bursts of feeling.<\/span><\/p>\n

R<\/span><\/b> is for Regents, and there\u2019s no denying,<\/span><\/p>\n

of all fiery trials, this is the most trying.<\/span><\/p>\n

S<\/span><\/b> is for Seniors and Sheepskins and Sages,<\/span><\/p>\n

and Schoolbooks shut up, with no more turned down pages.<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span><\/b> is Tuition, said sadly each quarter,<\/span><\/p>\n

by the poor man who sends here his son or his daughter.<\/span><\/p>\n

U<\/span><\/b> is for Up on Pine Hill for a ramble,<\/span><\/p>\n

And V<\/b> is for the View that rewards the hard scramble.<\/span><\/p>\n

W<\/span><\/b> stands for the Winner of prizes,<\/span><\/p>\n

who bears off the palm at the field exercises.<\/span><\/p>\n

X<\/span><\/b> is for Xenophon, painful to master,<\/span><\/p>\n

where more than one student has come to disaster.<\/span><\/p>\n

Y<\/span><\/b> is the Yell, void of sense, blood congealing,<\/span><\/p>\n

yet the best method known of expressing deep feeling.<\/span><\/p>\n

And Z<\/strong> is for — well, for the twenty-sixth letter,<\/span><\/p>\n

and the end of a ditty that might have been better.<\/span><\/p>\n
