In the late 1890s, as a member of the Coast Guard, he became captain of the U.S. Cutter \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/oceanexplorer.noaa.gov\/explorations\/21bear\/features\/arctic-cutter\/arctic-cutter.html\" target=\"_blank\">Bear<\/a>\u201d that patrolled Alaskan waters helping commercial fishing ships as well as the native population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">Wood acquired many artifacts from his expeditions around the world and donated several pieces in 1935 to the Steinheim Museum at Alfred University. He connected with Alfred during visits to his sisters Angeline and Julia, who both taught in the university\u2019s School of Agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">One unique artifact was a slingshot or \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadashistory.ca\/explore\/first-nations-inuit-metis\/graceful-weapon\" target=\"_blank\">bolas<\/a>\u201d from the Inuit people. They used this hunting weapon by swirling it in the air, launching it at a low-flying bird.
