Howells<\/a>, a major figure in the late 19th-century literary circles, was a known associate of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edwin_Booth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edwin Booth<\/a>, brother to the infamous John Wilkes Booth; it&#8217;s likely that&#8217;s how the Howells family came to own this eyeglass. The accompanying note says &#8220;A\u00a0 stage eyeglass belonging to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Wilkes_Booth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Wilkes Booth<\/a>, the murderer of President Lincoln.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the curious artifacts in the University Archives &amp; Special Collections is this theater eyeglass, part of the Howells-Frechette Collection.
